Lord Hague said the row between Rishi Sunak and Boris Johnson over the former premier’s resignation honours list was an “unseemly business”.
The former leader of the Conservative Party said it was “not a great sight” to see the current Prime Minister and one of his predecessors engage in a public slanging match.
Mr Sunak claimed Mr Johnson had asked him to overrule the House of Lords Appointments Commission (HOLAC) after some of his proposed peerages were blocked. Mr Johnson then accused Mr Sunak of “talking rubbish”.
Asked if the row was “unbecoming”, Lord Hague told Times Radio: “It is not a great sight. It always happens… all prime ministers fall out with their successors and so it has happened quickly in this case…”
He added: “But I think in the end, okay, three MPs have gone, well there are 350 who haven’t gone and I think that they have a sensible view of the Conservative Party between now and the next election that they need to back Rishi Sunak, that the Government is making progress and it the Government itself is now working well compared to when Boris Johnson was there.
“So I don’t think Conservatives should be too downhearted about it, but certainly it is an unseemly business.”
